Let’s set the scene: We are somewhere between 2008 and 2010. It’s a Saturday afternoon in late July, and the midsummer heat is caressing your skin. Okay, so maybe slapping your skin is more like it, but you don’t care because it’s the weekend! You hit the mall with your friends to pick up the latest pair of J’s that your cousin put on hold for you. Y’all are going out tonight, and life is great. Later that evening, after dancing and sweating to several songs, you excuse yourself to the restroom to freshen up. After you generously spritz your face and chest with a refreshing mist, you open your eyes just in time to admire your beauty before the mirror sucks you in…
Artist Note: as a 1993 baby, coming of age in the beautiful hill country of Central Texas in the 2000s and 2010s was an experience that I will cherish forever! Illusions was an iconic nightclub in Pflugerville, Texas (a suburban city right outside of my hometown of Austin) when I was in middle & high school that often had teen nights. That was truly an era; they just don’t make clubs like they used to. As children transition into teens, they tend to become more aware of the currency of glamour and the power that illusions have on us. Sometimes, this is a sobering bite of reality that catapults them into “growing up” before they’re ready. Sometimes, this is the reawakening of ancestral gifts to fulfill lineage prophecies. For me? It was both. Illusions glamour mist is the first piece in a larger collection that is a living love letter from me to Texas and from Texas to me.
